Series: AI in Healthcare (3/4) Is it really possible for a machine to save lives?

Inspiring AI supported machine learning systems for healthcare service providers

With the fascinating speed and diversity at which AI has entered our lives, in this series of articles where we grouped the benefits within healthcare sector, we discussed applications that make the lives of patients and doctors easier. Now it's time for healthcare service providers.

Who are these service providers? As you know, hospitals, insurance companies, imaging centers etc.

There are various services and I have chosen three headings; I am sharing the interesting jobs I found with their links below:

• Robotic surgery

• Medical imaging

• Storage & analysis of medical information

The subject is exciting as always, let's take a look together:

AI-Assisted Decision Mechanism during Surgery: Some #roboticsurgical systems incorporate AI algorithms that can analyze real-time data from the surgical site, such as tissue characteristics and blood flow, and provide suggestions to the surgeon or even warnings regarding the patient's specific condition. This helps prevent potential complications. IBM Watson is a prominent name in this field.

Years ago, we’ve seen it in Grey's Anatomy, while the patient was lying on the operating table, they projected the real-time 3D image of their heart in the air, allowing the surgeon to manipulate it with their hand, zoom in if necessary, and proceed accordingly. It still feels surreal, but it's not, NVIDIA Clara does that.

Medical Imaging: The systems that appear in this field aim to prevent potential misdiagnoses that the human eye of a doctor or radiologist may not perceive, perceive with delay, or make, and directly save lives.

For example, Aidoc is a company that offers AI-assisted solutions in emergency #radiology and brain imaging. By analyzing CT scans automatically, it helps detecting emergency conditions and speeds up the diagnostic process for radiologists.

Another example is Zebra Medical Vision, which provides #AI supported analysis services for various medical imaging modalities. By conducting analyses in areas such as breast cancer screening, liver diseases, and heart health, it assists doctors in the diagnostic process, providing an opportunity for early intervention.

Electronic Health Records (EHR) Management: AI offers systems designed to help #healthcareproviders manage the vast amount of patient data in electronic health records, enabling faster access, reducing errors, and improving decision-making processes. We previously mentioned the structure of Healthbank (Switzerland), for which I also provided consultancy. For example, when applying for health insurance, it integrates with all other sources of information collected by the government (traffic, justice, health, family history, etc.) and provides you with a risk analysis. Based on factors such as the likelihood of having an accident due to speeding, the amount of alcohol you purchase, genetic risks, and your geographical location, it provides you with a price based on the analysis it conducts. Companies to look into: Cerner Corporation, Ciox Health.

Our next topic will be directly related to pharmaceutical companies and promotional systems.

Until the next article, cheers!
